Excellent Planting Event: Piedmont Middle and High Schools 2/10/25
26 Volunteers. 11 Trees Planted.
We had an excellent planting event at Piedmont High School and Piedmont Middle School yesterday. Union County Urban Forester Dr. Keith O'Herrin went through proper planting procedures with the students, and then the students worked together to install 11 large shade trees at strategic spots around the campuses.
The trees, a mix of oaks, tulip poplars, and sugar maples, are among the native trees that are discussed in the ag program at the school. And at every tree, the students reviewed the key elements in a successful planting:
-
Right tree in the right location
-
Hole width and depth
-
Root ball preparation
-
Proper mulching
-
Proper watering
Not only will every tree filter water and remove 40 pounds of CO2 annually from our air, but research has shown that both student health and academic performance are enhanced by a green environment. It's hoped that not only will these trees make a material difference for the school, but that the students will go on to plant more trees at their own homes.
Special thanks to Pilgrim's Corporation, who sponsored the event, and to the school maintenance crews who augered out the initial holes.
